The Southampton Tenants’ Union Guarantee explained 

Southampton Tenants Union is registered as a limited company (Ltd.) For further reference we will use “STU Ltd.”
The members of most limited companies are the shareholders. Shareholders can lose the money they invested as shares if the company is wound up with debts. They can only lose this share money, and so have limited liability. With STU Ltd., as it has no shares, each member signs a guarantee only paid if the company is wound up with debts. This guaranteed amount represents the members' liability. The liability is limited to the amount certified in our rules (Articles of Association). STU Ltd. has set the amount of the liability at £1.00. We have no shares; thus, STU Ltd.’s membership is defined by the people who have signed the Statement Of Guarantee of £1.00.
